Born on 11/27/32 to Gomecindo and Leonor Fierro Avalos in Lordsburg, NM.

An only child, her father passed away when she was just 13. Her mother was a maid and cook who only completed third grade at Valedon school. Leonor strove to give her daughter all the opportunities that could be afforded her including piano lessons with Mrs. Fuller. Rebecca served in many churches over the years as accompanist and still plays the piano at age 88. The most important thing that Leonor taught Rebecca was about education, she said education was the way to a better life and that no one could ever take your education away from you. 

Rebecca was educated in the Lordsburg public schools and graduated from Lordsburg High School in 1950. She went on to attend the University of New Mexico in Albuquerque and graduated from there in 1954.

Married to a US Air Force Sargent she taught elementary school in Albuquerque, NM, Goldsboro, NC, Okinawa, Japan and Lordsburg, NM.

Her passion was always to enrich and broaden her students experiences. She truly believed that anything was possible for them to achieve. She fostered each child’s talents and abilities and never compared them to others, educating them as individuals allowed for extra growth and built their confidence from a young age.

She also taught English as a Second Language to adults in Lordsburg and she enjoyed that role immensely. 

Mrs. Barringer retired in 1995 to care for her aged mother and her beloved 3 year old grandson. The family moved to North Carolina in 1996 where she volunteered at the local elementary school and taught Sunday School for adults for many years. 

She still lives an active life, cooking three meals a day, exercising and reading her Bible. 

She sends her best wishes to all her friends and former students and she remains a very proud Mighty Maverick supporter!
